One of the things about getting older is… it's harder to fall and stay asleep. A side effect of that is you become more educated in Infomercial-ology. Yepper! You can lose weight, pop your booty, tone your double chin, even learn to putt better on the toilet. (Those are real – Click here). And NO… We don't own one of any of those.
At least once a month, I get an invitation to a FREE Seminar on making money on the internet. This is where they sell you a proprietary system that helps you directly compete with the other 1000 plus people who dropped $2500 to buy into their program! I have researched these, and the products they sell are often more expensive than just going to a normal on-line store. The only people making money on the internet is them.
I also spend a lot of time attending webinars to learn about the latest and greatest Social Networking tools, tips, trends and more. Most of these are free, because they are trying to sell you a training program or a subscription to a monthly service. You spend an hour and get 1-2 solid tidbits or takeaways, and the rest is filled with what makes them different or better. Some of the more salesy ones… offer you $4000 of stuff for only $997.
Marketers often put ‘Sizzle on the Steak'… “Did you know there are 600 million potential customers on Facebook?” or “We can improve your Google ranking” or “Our New Social Networking Tool has resulted in 1000's of new fans for our customers”. There is probably a small bit of truth to each of those, but I have a saying… “No matter how much perfume you put on a pig… it still smells like a pig!”. Adding Anti-Oxidents adds value to a product so people will pay more for it. And one of the classics “But Wait.. There's More… We'll double that offer… Just pay additional Shipping and Handling” (often costing more than the original purchase).
When it comes to on-line marketing, there is no ‘One Size Fits All' solution. Each business has different customers with different expectations. So how you market on-line will utilize different Social Networking techniques and tools!
1) Know Your Customers
Who are they? What are they looking for? What media are they most likely to respond to (email, Facebook, Twitter etc)?
2) Send them to a Unique Place
Creating a landing page or microsite is key to measuring results. If you send them to your main website, you have a more difficult time measuring how different marketing methods converts to leads and sales.
3) Measure Results
You must have a tools to measure the response and effectiveness of each of your on-line campaigns. These include Google Analytics, HubSpot, Bit.ly and many others.
But Wait… There's More!
I have a new website that is still being built up. I wanted to share one page with you. It describes a new service I call Personal Webinars. This is a service where I offer you Real-Time, One-on-One coaching and/or consulting on any on-line marketing issues. Already I have helped companies link their Twitter to their Facebook (the right way), review and update their LinkedIn profile, improve their WordPress blogs, and create better eMails using Constant Contact, IContact and more. (Click Here to view the Web Page).
